There were quite a number of responses to the final question: ‘who else might you suggest?’
Throwing out the ridiculous answers (including John Rocker), there were a couple of names that stood out as repeats:
- THEO EPSTEIN – Actually no longer a GM, his title with the Cubs is President of Baseball Operations, and he’s going nowhere. Cubs GM Jed Hoyer could get a nod, but I have a hunch that he’s not moving anywhere else, either.
- KIM NG – I almost forced her name onto the poll despite no writer mentioning her as a candidate. Her title is ‘Senior Vice-President for Baseball Operations with MLB’, reporting to Joe Torre, and was previously an AGM under Brian Cashman in New York and Ned Colletti in Los Angeles. She could get a legitimate shot as the role.
- TOM GLAVINE – While he was part of a team trying to buy the Marlins, several of you wanted him to become the GM – presumably because he’d have a chance to ‘own’ the Marlins in an entirely different way?
Glavine strikes me as a tough competitor, but has no experience as one who would be running baseball from the business side on a daily basis. If he were a step or two away from that particular role, I think he’d be an asset to the Braves. But GM? That’s a different animal.
Dale Murphy was also mentioned by two respondents, but I’ll double the words above for Murph… and he’s just too nice a guy for the job.
- J.J. PICOLLO – Great readers we have here. If we can’t get Dayton Moore, then maybe snag his deputy in Kansas City? That sounds quite reasonable to me as well. Good call.
- JASON McLEOD – Likewise the same words apply for McLeod, the Cubs Senior VP of Scouting and Player Development. The Cubs inked him and Hoyer to extensions through 2021, though they also allowed him to interview for the vacant Twins job a year ago (Picollo also was interviewed for that job).
There were a smattering of other suggestion, most of which aren’t really either experienced (Mark DeRosa), are unavailable (Farhan Zaidi), or simply would neverbe considered (Frank Wren).
But the Braves might do well to interview Ng, Picollo, and McLeod. Hopefully y’all could live with any of these fine candidates as well.
