The Pitching Questions

  • Pitching Question 1: How many innings will the ORIGINAL starting rotation (Teheran/Colon/Dickey/Garcia/Folty) pitch for Atlanta in 2017?

This was a tricky one to gauge.  You just knew that Colon and Garcia – as a minimum – probably weren’t going to last the year.  But how long would they last?  Would anyone get hurt?  There were lots of possible variables to this one.

In the end I set the over/under point at 700 innings.  Perfect – since 51% of you answered “over” and 49% “under”.

  • Folty:  152 innings
  • Dickey:  190
  • Garcia:  113
  • Teheran:  188.1
  • Colon:  63

I’m still kind of shocked that Bart only had 63… in 13 starts.  But these added up to… 706.1 innings.

Nailed it.

Correct answer:  700 or more (706.1)

  • Pitching Question 2: 16 different pitchers started games for the Braves in 2016. How many will do so in 2017?

Many of us – myself included – took the optimistic answer of “10 or fewer”, but it was still a solid split of opinion on this:  56.7% took that, with 43.3% going with “11 or more”.

Nailed this one, too!  There were 11 pitchers used.  Luiz Gohara was probably the (pleasant) surprise of the group, seeing as he started in High-A ball.

He was joined by Newcomb, Sims, Blair, Wisler, and Fried.

Correct answer:  11 or more (exactly 11)

  • Pitching Question 3: How many pitchers will reach 10 wins for the Braves?

‘3 or more’ or ‘2 or fewer’?  You own answer probably was dependent on your outlook for the Braves’ season in general… and almost 71% took the optimistic ‘over’ value.

That turned out to be correct, though it was nail-bitingly close:

  • Foltynewicz:  exactly 10 wins
  • R.A. Dickey:  exactly 10 wins
  • Julio Teheran:  11 wins

That’s it… nobody else had more than 4!

Correct answer:  3 or more (exactly 3)

  • Pitching Question 4: Which group will have a lower combined ERA: the Braves starters or all relievers?

This was straightforward ‘which group would be better?’ question.

Most (64%) sided with the bullpen.  That turned out to be right, but fact is, neither group exactly lit it up this year.

Correct answer:  Relievers

  • Pitching Question 5: Does Bartolo Colon set the record for wins by a Dominican pitcher (regardless of who he’s playing for)?

He wants this record… but might need to find another club to get it next season.

Colon managed to eke out just 2 wins for the Braves, but recovered with the Twins for a 7-14 record.  He needs 4 more for the Dominican record.

Correct answer:  No (gets 10 or less)
