Hitter of the week: The Braves haven’t exactly had the best luck in Cuba as their signings have struggled to perform. However, they may have found a gem this offseason in outfielder Juan Carlos Negret. Interestingly, he turns 18 today, and the Braves signed him over the offseason under the radar.

Negret has been assigned to the Dominican Summer League, and he’s been blowing away the competition. He hit .389/.542/.722/1.264 with 5 runs, 4 doubles, a triple, an RBI, and 3 steals with a 3/2 BB/K ratio. Negret has the instincts and range to be a quality center fielder, but his arm is at the level that he’s a quality defender at either corner as well.

Honorable mention: He was injured still to open the season, as evidenced by his swing, but Ozzie Albies has hit very well since he came off the DL, and he’s shown a much, much better lefty swing.

Albies put up a great line over the last week, hitting .333/.379/.667/1.046 with 5 runs scored, 2 doubles, 2 triples, a home run, 7 RBI, and 2 stolen bases, with a 2/5 BB/K ratio.

Pitcher of the week: He only threw 2 2/3 innings on the week, but the way he threw those innings are a great example of the big progress that Akeel Morris made from last season.

Many were on Morris as a guy that would get called up early by the Braves this season based on his ERA and strikeout rate last year, but he did struggle with his control, and his command was even worse. This year he’s cleaned that up significantly.

On the week, Morris threw 2 2/3 innings without allowing a run, giving up 2 hits, walking none, and striking out 7 (!!) batters.

Honorable mention: After a week where he was utterly dominant, Mike Soroka followed up with the best start of the week in the system, going 7 scoreless innings, allowing 3 hits and a walk, striking out 5.
