Hitter of the week: Last season, Austin Riley struggled to open the season with similar reports on improved defense before beginning a big offensive tear in May that carried through the rest of the season.
This season, Riley has received note for his improved defensive play from multiple sources already, but his bat hadn’t taken off. This week changed that as Riley went .462/.483/.846 for a 1.329 OPS with 5 runs scored, a double, 3 home runs, 10 RBI, and a 1/3 BB/K ratio.
Honorable mention: Once again a bridesmaid, Braxton Davidson finishes as the honorable mention for the second straight week with another big week, going .348/.464/.609 for a 1.073 OPS, scoring 7 runs, hitting two home runs, driving in 3 runs, and posting a 5/9 BB/K ratio.
Over the last two weeks, Davidson is hitting .357/.509/.595 for a 1.104 OPS with 14 runs scored, a double, 3 home runs, 6 RBI, and a 13/16 BB/K ratio.
I do want to give a quick shout out to two Rome catchers, Lucas Herbert, who went .278/.316/.778/1.094 with 3 HR on the week, and Brett Cumberland, who put up a .273/.500/.545/1.045 line with a home run as well.
Pitcher of the week: With none of the two start pitchers putting up solid numbers, the best single start of the week was definitely Kolby Allard this week for Mississippi, going 6 scoreless innings, allowing 3 hits and no walks, striking out 11 in his gem against Michael Kopech and Birmingham on Thursday.
Honorable mention: Like Davidson, Tyler Pike has received multiple honorable mention write ups this season already in just the 5th full week of play. Pike threw the second half of a double header for Florida and went 6 scoreless innings, allowing 2 hits and 2 walks, striking out 8 for the second best start of the week in the system.

Thursday’s game between Gwinnett and Durham was postponed due to rain.
Friday
Gwinnett scored a victory over Charlotte Friday 5-4 with a 9th inning run. Aaron Blair got the start for Gwinnett and was effectively wild, going 5 innings, allowing a run on 4 hits and 5 walks, striking out one.
Johan Camargo had three singles and stole a base. Anthony Recker had a home run and a double. Ozzie Albies and Xavier Avery each had a single, walk, and a stolen base. Rio Ruiz had a double and a walk. Ryan Howard had a single and a walk.
Saturday
Charlotte struck early and defeated Gwinnett 8-4. Sean Newcomb struggled on the day, going 4 innings, allowing 3 runs (1 earned) on 8 hits and no walks, striking out 6.
Anthony Recker had two walks and a hit by pitch. Johan Camargo had a double and a single. Mel Rojas, Jr. had a double and a walk. Ozzie Albies had a single and a walk.
Sunday
Gwinnett was defeated soundly on Sunday by Charlotte, 7-1. Luke Jackson went 5 1/3 innings, allowing 6 runs on 8 hits and 2 walks, striking out 5.
Mel Rojas, Jr. had a home run, single, and a walk. David Freitas had a double and a walk. Blake Lalli had a single and a walk.

Mississippi won the biggest pitching matchup in minor league baseball on the night as they defeated Michael Kopech and the Birmingham Barons 3-0. Kolby Allard was incredible on the night, going 6 innings, allowing 3 hits and no walks, striking out 11.
Luis Valenzuela had a home run, double, and a single. Connor Lien had a walk, hit by pitch, and stolen base.
Friday
Mississippi scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning to defeat Birmingham 4-2. Matt Withrow went 5 scoreless innings, allowing a hit and 4 walks, striking out 7.
Jared James had a triple and three singles. Kade Scivicque had two doubles. Keith Curcio had a double. Connor Lien had a stolen base.
Saturday
Mississippi scored in just two innings on the game, but it led to a 5-3 victory over Birmingham. Max Fried got the start and went 6 1/3 innings, allowing 3 runs on 6 hits and a walk, striking out 10.
Sal Giardina had three singles and stole a base. Jared James had a double and a single. Joey Meneses had two singles. Carlos Franco and Adam Walker each had a home run.
Sunday
Mississippi scored 3 runs in the top of the first, but that was all they got in the game as they fell 8-3 to Birmingham on Sunday. Mike Soroka had a rough start, going 5 innings, allowing 4 runs (2 earned) on 2 hits and 4 walks (and 3 HBP) while striking out 4.
Carlos Franco had a home run and a single. Kade Scivicque had two singles and a walk. Travis Demeritte had a single and a walk. Keith Curcio had a double.

Chase Johnson-Mullins threw brilliant ball in relief, going 3 1/3 innings, allowing 1 hit, no runs, and no walks, striking out 3, to allow the Fire Frogs to get to extras.
