Hitter of the week: Sean Kazmar was quietly the most difficult bat to quiet down in the system in the last week. He hit .421/.455/.789 with 5 runs scored, a double, 2 home runs, 4 RBI, and even had a 2/0 BB/K rate for the week as he provided a steady bat in the middle of the Gwinnett lineup.
Honorable mention: The major league club took note of the excellent performance of the Gwinnett catcher and first baseman Blake Lalli, who finished very strong at the end of the season and had a great week, putting up a .526/.524/.579 line with a double and 6 RBI. He’s been a consistent piece of the bottom of Gwinnett’s lineup for the last month.
Pitcher of the week: He threw well to start the year, but Chris Ellis had really struggled since May, really. However with the chance to clinch for Gwinnett on Saturday, Ellis spun his best start of the entire season. He went 7 innings, with no runs allowed, allowing just 3 hits and no walks, striking out 8.
Honorable mention: If it weren’t for Ellis, the clinching start that everyone would remember would be the start of Max Fried for Rome. He went out and threw 7 2/3 innings, allowing just one run on 3 hits and a walk, striking out 11 hopeless hitters on Saturday night.

Monday, September 5th
The Braves closed out their regular season by clinching the IL South Division with a win over Charlotte 6-2. Tyrell Jenkins made the start, going 7 2/3 innings, allowing 2 runs on 10 hits and a walk, striking out 2. Reid Brignac had two singles and a walk. Blake Lalli had a double and a single. Emilio Bonifacio had two singles. Mel Rojas had a single, walk, and a stolen base. Sean Kazmar had a single and a walk.
Wednesday, September 7th
The Braves opened up their playoff series with Columbus by taking the opening game on the road 5-4. The Braves threw a bullpen game, started by Carlos Portuondo, who went 2 2/3 innings, allowing 2 runs on 3 hits and 3 walks, striking out 4. Bradley Roney had a big relief appearance, going 3 1/3 shutout innings, allowing just one hit and no walks, striking out 8 hitters. Emilio Bonifacio had three singles and a stolen base. Reid Brignac had a home run, single, and a walk. Ronnier Mustelier and Blake Lalli each had two singles. Daniel Castro had a home run.
Thursday, September 8th
Columbus put up a 4-spot on the Gwinnett bullpen after a solid Aaron Blair start as Gwinnett fell 6-4 in game 2 of their playoff series. Blair went 6 innings, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits and 4 walks, striking out 6. Blake Lalli and Emilio Bonifacio each had three singles. Tyler Moore had two singles and a walk. Sean Kazmar had a double and a home run. Matt Tuiasosopo had two walks. Daniel Castro had a single and a walk. Mel Rojas had a double. Matt Lipka had a stolen base.
Friday, September 9th
The Braves got back into winning ways with a huge offensive performance, defeating Columbus 11-1. Chris Ellis had his best game of the year, going 7 scoreless innings, allowing 3 hits and no walks, striking out 8. Mel Rojas had a triple, double, two singles, and a stolen base. Ronnier Mustelier had two singles and a walk. Reid Brignac had a home run and a single. Tyler Moore had a home run and a walk.
Saturday, September 10th
Gwinnett clinced their series on Saturday with a 5-4 victory. Tyrell Jenkins made the start, going 5 innings, allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on 6 hits and 4 walks, striking out 3. Sean Kazmar had a home run, three singles, and a walk. Ronnier Mustelier had three singles. Blake Lalli had two singles and a walk. Emilio Bonifacio and Mel Rojas each had a single and a walk. Kyle Kubitza had a double and a stolen base.
Gwinnett begins the International League Championship Series at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday at 6:35PM ET

Monday, September 5th
Mississippi closed out their regular season with a loss to Biloxi. After the Braves got down early, they pulled starter Lucas Sims early and rested other players to get some rest for the playoffs as they fell 4-1. Sims went 3 innings allowing 2 runs on 5 hits and no walks, striking out 5. Dustin Peterson was the only hitter on base twice with a single and a walk. Ozzie Albies had a double.
Wednesday, September 7th
The Braves had incredibly uncharacteristic performances from normally rock steady members of their bullpen as they fell in the first game of the playoffs to Pensacola 6-5. Sean Newcomb made the start and went 5 innings, allowing 1 run on 2 hits and 6 walks, striking out 6. Chad Sobotka and Caleb Dirks, who were both incredibly reliable throughout the season, allowed 4 unearned runs between them in the loss.
In the loss, Johan Camargo had a solid game, with a triple, double, and a single. Dustin Peterson had two singles. Carlos Franco had a double.
Thursday, September 8th
Mississippi followed a masterful pitching performance from Patrick Weigel to a game 2 victory 5-0. Weigel went 7 scoreless innings, allowing 3 hits and 2 walks, striking out 8. Carlos Franco had a monster day at the plate with a home run, a single, and a walk. Levi Hyams had a double and a single. Joey Meneses had two singles. Connor Lien had a double.
Friday, September 9th
Mississippi’s offense put a hurting on Pensacola on Friday, defeating the Blue Wahoos 9-2. Max Povse went 4 2/3 innings, allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 7 hits and 2 walks, striking out 5. Mallex Smith led the offense from the leadoff spot with a triple, double, single, and a walk. Kade Scivicque had four singles in the game. Carlos Franco had a triple and two singles. Joey Meneses had a double and two singles. Dustin Peterson had two singles. Keith Curcio hit an inside-the-park home run.
Saturday, September 10th
Mississippi closed out the first round series with Pensacola with a 4-2 victory Saturday night. Lucas Sims made the start, going 5 innings, allowing 2 runs on 2 hits and 2 walks, striking out 6. Carolina finished out its 2016 season with a win on Monday over Winston-Salem 1-0. Wes Parsons pitched an incredible game, going 8 scoreless innings, allowing 2 hits and 3 walks, striking out 4. Keith Curcio and Jordan Edgerton each had a single and a double. Erison Mendez had two singles. This was the Mudcats’ 5th straight win to close out likely the end of the Braves’ relationship with Carolina
