The Good and The Not So Good

Bright spots on the day were provided by Inciarte – in spite of his base running faux pas – and Freeman who continued to hit the ball with authority.

Since the All Star break Freeman is hitting .290/.403/.570 and since the arrival of Kemp .296/.464/.756. Meanwhile Inciarte  was hitting  .342/.387/.395/.782 going into today’s game and playing sterling defense.

The flip side of those bright spots starts with Tyrell Jenkins and horrible K/BB ratio.  In the minors that number always hovered between 1.4 and 1.89 but since reaching the majors it remained sub one.

After today’s outing he has 21 Ks and 30 walks, that’s a 0.70 rate. He’s also giving up home runs as a pretty stiff rate. He’s now given up eight home runs in 46 innings or one every 5 2/3 innings on the bump. Add to that he gets very few whiffs; today he had one.

His fastball wasn’t fast today; perhaps it was the heat or perhaps he was just tired.

Here are his velocity numbers as a starter.

Young pitchers need time to grow into their place in the majors and Jenkins may well do that. But something has to change.  Moving on…

Gordon Beckham continues be who he was for the White Sox that ended with his release.

After grounding out in the seventh his average dropped to .151

Please do not start him any more.
