Michael Mader
The Marlins selected the 6’2”, 195 pound lefty in the third round of the 2014 draft and assigned him to Batavia in the shirts season New York – Penn league. At Batavia he made 12 starts throwing 45 innings while posting a 2.00 ERA, 1.049 WHIP, striking out 28 and walking 15.
Last season he pitched at Greensboro in the low A South Atlantic League where he made 27 starts throwing 140 2/3 innings with a 4.73 ERA, 1.408 WHIP striking out 86 and walking 57. That production in a league where he was about a year younger than the average player convinced Baseball America to rank Mader the Marlins’ #24 prospect.
This season with Jupiter in the A+ Florida league he’s made 21 starts and one relief appearance throwing 103 innings with a a 3.50 ERA, 1.272 WHIP striking out 81 and walking 34.
The BA scouting report ($) gives us a glimpse of what we will see from Mader.
". . .Mader physically resembles Patrick Corbin, the Diamondbacks lefty and 2009 second-round pick . . .(and) like Corbin, relies on a fastball that sits 90-93 mph. Unlike . . .Corbin, Mader’s best breaking pitching is an overhand curveball. . . Mader doesn’t possess Corbin’s athleticism or command of swing-and-miss stuff. . . uses a changeup to try to keep right handers off balance . . .(he) has fluid mechanics and profiles as a polished, back-end starter."
Here’s the prospect video from MLB.com prior to the 2015 season, unfortunately it’s a collections of stills.
Next: Mr Seymour I presume?
