Hitter of the week: When he was paired with Ozzie Albies last summer, many people missed the talent of Omar Obregon because of his more talented double play partner. Then this season, he was injured just as he had an opportunity to play with another talented shortstop. Instead, Obregon’s exceptional defense is getting a chance to play at short, and he’s got a nice contact swing with blazing speed, so once a ball gets out of the infield, there’s a chance he’ll end up with extra bases. On the week, Obregon went .563/.588/.875 with 4 runs, 3 doubles, a triple, an RBI, a 1/0 BB/K ratio, and 3 steals on the week.
Honorable mention: Obregon’s Carolina teammate also enjoyed a big week. Keith Curcio has been known to be a streaky hitter in general, but he has shown growth as a hitter in working pitchers from the leadoff spot this year. This last week, he flashed one thing that I’ve noticed this year that wasn’t present last year, and that’s his power when he gets the barrel of the bat to the ball with his quick wrists. Curcio went .538/.625/.846 with 4 runs, a double, a home run, 2 RBI, a 3/1 BB/K ratio, and 2 steals on the week.
Pitcher of the week: Kolby Allard went down from Rome to Danville in mid-June with an 8+ ERA, and there were some worried about the young lefty. They need worry no longer. Allard has been exceptional for Danville, and this week, he put in two more tremendous starts. Allard did not allow a single run all week, throwing 12 innings in his two starts, allowing 6 hits and 3 walks, while striking out a blazing 14 hitters.
Honorable mention: On Sunday, two GCL pitchers were part of a no-hitter, and they both were pitching their second game of the week, with exceptional stats. 2016 draftee Joey Wentz made two starts, going 6 innings without giving up a run, only allowing 2 hits and a walk while striking out 12 hitters. Odalvi Javier is more unknown as a signee from the Dominican in the winter of 2014 in his second season with the GCL. Javier’s got a nice two-pitch mix, and he’s been tremendous this year, and this week especially, as he went 8 scoreless innings, allowing 4 hits with no walks, striking out 7.
