Braves Draft Update

We are continuing to keep up with signings as they come in.  This chart (below) will be updated on-the-fly when those reports are received.

More from Tomahawk Take

The latest as of this moment is Bryse Wilson, our 4th round pick from Orange High School in Hillsborough, NC.  He is inked for over double the slot value at $1,200,000 to forgo his college commitment.

When you add up the known/rumored bonuses for the signees over the top ten rounds so far, this sums to $11,460,000.  However, that’s not all:  bonuses above $100K for players in Rounds 11+ are also tallied into the bonus pool totals, so we need to add $475,000 more… bringing the total to $11,935,000.

We still have Brett Cumberland, Tyler Neslony, and Marcus Mooney to add in, plus we do not have bonus figure for Taylor Hyssong.  All are college players, so they should be under-slot bonuses.

That’s good, because with the signings we know of, this leaves just $1,289,100 to cover those 4 players… plus any other over-slot deals that might be needed further down the list.  As it happens, though, even full slot deals would add to $1,355,300, so they’re roughly in the right ballpark.

In Reserve

There is a window for a little extra beyond that.

The Braves can exceed their bonus pool allotment by as much as 5% without incurring the wrath of MLB (losing their 1st round pick for next year, which obviously would be a horrible penalty).  That allows $661K of additional pool spending, for a total of $1.905 million still available.

If/When the Braves start using that $661K of wiggle room, they will have to pay 75 cents extra for every dollar spent as a penalty.  But that’s likely part of the overall plan.
