Cashman ‘open to anything’ that improves Yankees

NEW YORK — The key word that general manager Brian Cashman kept repeating Tuesday was “flexibility,” especially as it related to letting the Nationals claim reliever Matt Thornton off waivers. His attention was also focused on the improvements he thinks the Yankees can still make as Michael Pineda and Masahiro Tanaka work themselves back to the rotation.

“I’m open to anything that makes us better. I’m not shut down for business, whether it’s buying [or] whether it’s reshuffling the deck, as we’re doing today,” said Cashman.

[ Ed. note:  why am I quoting Yankees GM Brian Cashman from 15 months ago??? Because he repeated that yesterday… ]

Yankees GM Brian Cashman on trades: ‘I’m open to anything’

STAFF REPORT / YAHOOSPORTS.COM

The Yankees are all about improving their lineup. So much so, that general manager Brian Cashman is willing to make trades this offseason if the right offer presents itself.

“I’m always open to anything,” Cashman said, via Fox Sports. “I’m not afraid.”

“You have to be pretty aggressive and open to trade a good young pitcher under team control (Shane Greene), a left-handed prospect (Manny Banuelos) or a guy like Martin Prado who fits you like a glove,” Cashman said. “If we can find matches to make us better as we go forward, we’re all ears.”

“I don’t anticipate (Luis) Severino, (Greg) Bird and (Aaron) Judge being traded — I don’t see that happening,” Cashman said. “But I’m open to having dialogue, no matter what. Dialogue is a good thing.”

[ Ed. note: there’s one glaring name that did NOT appear in that list Cashman rattled off at the end… that of catcher Gary Sanchez.  By the way, he’s hitting .328 with a league-leading 6 homers and a 1.040 OPS in the Arizona Fall League right now.  Oy. ]
