The Seventh

The seventh started with a Eury Perez single to right.  Freeman hit a ground ball to second but Perez was in motion so the double play was avoided and Freeman was the only out. Chris Johnson lifted a deep fly to the warning track in left but Cody Asche was there and there were two out.

Jonny Gomes has been less than hot with RISP of late.  Since driving in a run on 12 June he’s gone 1-for-13 in those situations but today was different as he drove 1-1 pitch into left field for a single scoring Perez.

Peterson greeted Jeanmar Gomez with a line single to center and Lavarnway followed with a single to left center to score Gomes and give the Braves a 6-2 lead.

More from Tomahawk Take

That was Teheran’s last inning of work, On the day he threw 100 pitches – 67 for strikes – allowing 2 runs on 8 hits, walking no one while striking out 7.

Andrew McKirahan gave up a broken bat infield hit and a screamer down the line but a double play and a strikeout got him out of trouble and Arodys Vizcaino a 1-2-3 ninth

That’s A Wrap

Okay it was the Phillies not the 27 Yankees but this was a big win for Teheran and the Braves.  Teheran broke that inexplicable streak of road mediocrity and took the role of stopper to end the losing streak that looked like a mountain weighing down the Braves in the first three games.

Before Peterson hit that 3-run homer, the Braves had not scored more than three runs in a game in their past 10 games and had a 1-9 record in those games. He also looked like he’s starting to square the ball up again as he had three hit day including a beautiful drag bunt to go with that homer and line drive single.

Teheran’s performance today highlighted another issue bubbling underneath, who should be doing the catching? Let say that I’m not in favor of catcher ERA as a definitive way of evaluating performance there are simply too many variables not taken into account. However the numbers for Teheran including today’s game are worthy of further study.

Teheran Pitching to: G IP ER ERA WHIP
Christian Bethancourt 10 60 28 4.18 1.309
Ryan Lavarnway 5 34 2 2.91 1.118
A.J. Pierzynski 8 37 29 7.05 1.757
