  • But he wasn’t enough to entice the Yankees to part with one-time stud catching prospect [Gary Sanchez], according to a report from the New York Post’s George King.

The Braves and Yankees discussed a deal that would see a swap of the players, but New York rejected it, the report said. That’s despite Sanchez, 22, not being considered among the Yankees’ top four prospects that general manager Brian Cashman was quite reluctant to trade before Friday’s deadline.

[ Editor’s note:  here is the relevant quote from George King that was being cited above: ]

"“Gary Sanchez isn’t necessarily thought to be the caliber of Luis Severino, Aaron Judge, Greg Bird and Jorge Mateo, but the Yankees turned down overtures from the Braves for the catcher in exchange for outfielder Cameron Maybin.”"

[ The Yankees ultimately acquired versatile OF Dustin Ackley from the Mariners in exchange for two prospects: OF Ramon Flores and relief pitcher Jose Ramirez.  Ackley is 27 and under team control until 2018 (2015 is arbitration year 1 for him).  It is not known just how hard the Braves pushed for this, other players that might have been involved, or how close the teams might have been to making a deal.  Based on the trade that was completed, I’d have to think ‘kinda close’.

We should probably continue to follow this effort from Atlanta, for Sanchez is blocked, and will be for the foreseeable future.  The Braves could certainly revisit this idea in some form by the off-season.  ]
