Atlanta Braves bringing back Roxy Theatre for new stadium

WSBTV.COM REPORT

ATLANTA — A once well-known theater name from Atlanta’s music scene that faded away in recent years is making a comeback.

Derek Schiller with the Atlanta Braves told Channel 2’s Matt Belanger the team has partnered with concert promoter Live Nation to bring the Roxy Theater back to metro Atlanta.

“It’s really exciting we can put that on a venue that’s deserving of having that name,” Schiller said. “We’re really excited for what this means for everyone here in Atlanta.”

The original Roxy was a movie theater on Peachtree Street in downtown Atlanta demolished in the 1970s.

“I used to go to the Roxy Theater back in high school,” said Atlanta resident Adam Kappel.

The new Roxy will be located outside the gates of SunTrust Park and will handle a crowd of up to 4,000 people.

It will join the offices, shops and restaurants already planned around the ballpark.

“This site has more access points than Turner Field by a long shot,” Schiller said.

[ Ed. note:  we’ve heard for a while that the stadium site would be home to some year-round entertainment options, but other than the Chop House, those announcements have been slow in coming thus far.  This is the first concrete offering, with renderings showing the location (head 1 block west from the RF corner) that the theatre will occupy within the complex.  Hopefully this will spur more activity… and the kind of revenue stream that has been an integral part of the plan. ]
