ATLANTA — First baseman Freddie Freeman has a sprained right hand and will miss the Atlanta Braves‘ game Thursday against Boston, ending his streak of 234 consecutive games played, the longest active streak in the majors.

Freeman has played in every game dating to Sept. 24, 2013, and had his consecutive starts streak end at 217 (also a major league high) on May 31, although he subbed into that game in the late innings.

After getting examined by a hand specialist in the clubhouse, Freeman said he took a cortisone shot that he hopes will let him return Friday when Atlanta begins a three-game series against the New York Mets.

[ Ed. note:  more on this from Jeff in last night’s game recap, however – cortisone shots usually require a player to shut it down for 72 hours at a minimum… that would put Freeman out until perhaps Sunday ]
