During his ‘Inside Pitch’ radio show on Friday, former General Manager Jim Bowden was asked what the Braves were going to do about their faltering bullpen. Bowden’s response was surprisingly blunt.
He indicated that the plan was for the Braves to compete and win – not just for one year, but for several years in a row. But that ‘winning’ plan centered around 2017 and beyond, not just this year or even next. He also offered the opinion that skipper Fredi Gonzalez should be rewarded with a contract extension for his efforts and success in doing so much with so little this season.
If that’s the case – and his comments are certainly consistent with the lack of actually movement so far to acquire bullpen talent – then it could be a very rocky road this Summer as the offense tends to be streaky and the bullpen continues to implode.
