Peter Moylan‘s Debut with Gwinnett

Last night Peter Moylan pitched in a competitive game for the first time since September 18, 2013…not counting to abbreviated Spring comeback last year, pictured above.  This latest attempt was with the Gwinnett Braves.

On March 6th, the popular Aussie signed an interesting minor league deal with the Braves that was set up to have him function as a coach and a player – once he fully recovered from his second Tommy John surgery.  There was no way to know if the 36-1/2 year old side-armer would even make it back, but it was a reasonable gamble for all concerned.

Last night Pete completed 1 inning, though the rust showed a bit:  a wild pitch, 2 walks, a strikeout and 1 hit (a leadoff double), though he also managed to get out of that base-loaded jam without giving up a run.

Moylan was actually the only Gwinnett hurler to get off the mound unscathed, as the Norfolk Tides scored at will against Chien-Ming Wang (10 earned runs) and Mitchell Boggs (1 earned) in an 11-1 Gwinnett loss.

Of note:  a couple of familiar names are on that Norfolk squad:  Paul Janish and Pedro Beato, plus C Matt Wieters and Nolan Reimold.

OH BY THE WAY… in the nightcap of their double-header, here’s how some other Gwinnett relievers fared in a 2-1 victory:

  • Ryan Kelly:  2 innings, 2 hits, 1 walk, 1 K, no runs (Win)
  • Aaron Kurcz:  1 inning, 0 hits, 1 walk, 2 K, no runs (Save)

Welcome back to baseball, mate!
