Phil Gosselin’s injury

As we’ve previously mentioned here, Philip Gosselin has a fractured thumb that will require surgery to fix – you may have heard him discuss this a bit during last night’s game.

The injury is described as an “avulsion fracture”.  As it was explained to me (thanks, Fred), it’s as if a ligament was torn out of place and took a piece of bone in his thumb with it.

I was going to post a couple of pictures to help explain this, but … nah… most are pretty nasty, so we’re gonna go image-free here.

That said, it does sound like the surgical procedure to repair this is well known and understood (though also fairly extensive).  The other good news is that the errant thumb is on Gosselin’s non-throwing (glove) hand, so that should help get him back on the field a little more quickly – so long as he can grip a bat properly.

Figure on the full 8 weeks.
