Farm Reports: Minor League Action from Friday

ROME BRAVES

More from Tomahawk Take

Rome split a double-header with Augusta:   1-6 in the first game and 9-6 in the nightcap.  With 8 hits in that finale, Rome scored everything late:  5 runs in the 5th, 4 in the 6th (7 inning games).  Braxton Davidson got 2 hits and score twice.  Omar Obregon did likewise, but also knocked in 3.  Rome was helped by a couple of Augusta errors.

In the first game, Rome managed seven hits, but couldn’t put them together.  Barely 18-year-old Ricardo Sanchez was hit hard for 5 earned in 4.2 innings, but yielded 1 walk and struck out 5.

CAROLINA MUDCATS

The Mudcats beat Salem Friday night 4-1 to draw their record even for the year at 7-7.

Dustin Peterson got 3 RBI spread between the 6th and 8th innings (that’s when Carolina scored twice each) while going 1 for 3.  That hit was a homer – his second in 2 games.

Carolina got excellent pitching from 4 pitchers, led by Steve Janas:  5 innings, 5 hits, 1 run (earned), 1 walk, and 2 Ks.  His ERA?  1.00.  Teddy Stanklewicz almost matched him for the Red Sox, but the 6th inning was his undoing – 3 hits in 6 innings, 2 walks, 2 K, and… 2 runs scored by the Mudcats.

MISSISSIPPI BRAVES

Alas!  The streak is over!  Chattanooga salvage one game against the M-Braves last night, beating them 3-2.

The Braves scattered 7 hits, but missed opportunities, including a bases-loaded, 1 out threat in the 2nd erased by a double play.  Mallex Smith, while not getting a hit, was picked off the only time he did reach.  Even in the 7th innings – where Mississippi scored twice – the inning ended as Smith grounded out, leaving Matt Lipka (triple) on third.

Lipka, by the way, seems to have had something “click” this season as he’s hitting .390 so far.  Very encouraging.

Ryan Weber threw 4 excellent innings of 3-hit ball, no walk, and 5 K’s.  The Lookouts did most of their damage against Justin Jackson:  2 runs in 2 innings (the 6th).  The team only walked 1 Lookout batter all night – very good.

GWINNETT BRAVES

Gwinnett fell to Durham 8-6 on a walk-off 2-run jack by Joey Butler against newly arrived Greg Smith.  Oops.  Mitchell Boggs had a good inning in relief around 1 walk.  Smith was actually into his third inning last night when he surrendered the homer… that marring an otherwise good outing:  2 hits, 2 K, no walks.

Chien-Ming Wang did his usual:  bending a lot, but getting some innings in.  5 innings, 6 runs (4 earned), 2 walks, and 6 Ks.

Jose Peraza watch:  2 for 5, raising his average to .281.  He scored once, with no walks or Ks. He recorded his 5th steal.  Eury Perez got his tenth steal, plus threw out a runner from the outfield.

Pedro Ciriaco got his first Gwinnett homer in the losing cause; Cedric Hunter as well.
