Outman Placed on Extended Disabled List

SOURCED FROM DAVE O’BRIEN / AJC.COM

You may have been wondering what kind of gymnastics took place in order to get both the 40-man reserve roster and the 25-man active roster folded down to their respective limits ahead of Monday’s opener – particularly due to the last-minute monkey wrench on Sunday afternoon that was the Kimbrel trade.

Here’s what happened:

  • Arodys Vizcaino and Dian Toscano were both placed on the “restricted list” – a designation for those either not showing up or otherwise ineligible to play.  Vizcaino’s PED suspension made this fairly obvious; Toscano was still awaiting a US entry visa.  More on that in a bit.  With that “resticted” tag, both players could be replaced on the 40-man without penalty.
  • After the Kimbrel trade, Carlos Quentin was told to stay where he was:  he was Designated for Assignment (DFA’d), and was off the 40-man list essentially before he was added.
  • Joey Terdoslavich was put onto the 15-day DL for his wrist injury…which may or may not be real right now, but is plausible enough given his troubles in March.
  • As expected, Daniel Winkler was added to the 60-day DL, so he could also be replaced on the 40-man.
  • The surprise was that Brandon Cunniff was promoted to the majors – but that was necessitated for this reason:  Josh Outman‘s shoulder diagnosis.  Here’s DOB’s quote from the link above:
"Outman complained of pain near his left collarbone and shoulder during spring training and was shut down and sent to see a specialist, who diagnosed the ailment. Outman is among those who were born with an extra rib, and surgery could be recommended to remove it in order to continue pitching without a likely recurrence. It’s not known when or even if he’ll pitch for the Braves this season."

Okay, I personally didn’t want him on the roster in the first place, but that was for performance reasons… sure didn’t want to see this.  Nonetheless, the Braves have now placed him on the 60-day DL, which allowed Cunniff to come on board.

Dian Toscano

Well, that’s good timing:  throw him onto the restricted list to make the roster machinations work, then he finally shows up a day or two later.  Nice.

According to Bowman, there are still some things to be done for him, but Toscano will start working out at Disney, then perhaps join the AAA club at some point.  When that happened, another 40-man roster decision will have to be made since he will no longer be “restricted.”  We will see about that later.
