Toss Ups

If you hadn’t noticed I’ve already said EY Jr will be added to the roster and break camp with the Braves. He’s played well and been on base regularly; even stolen three bases. With him in place some quick math will tell you that there are three non-pitching spots to be filled. I’ve narrowed the list of candidates to five.

I believe that barring something unexpected Gosselin makes the team as the utility man. He’s the least expensive and a good defender.

Even though Cunningham got a hit and a couple of RBI today he hasn’t impressed this spring.  Almonte hasn’t hit a lick though he’s been given lots of chances to show the Braves why they should keep him. He went 0-3 yesterday and is now 4 for 23 (.173)  with 2 RBI and no extra base hits. That could be bad for him because others have been better.

Perez is a natural center fielder but with Young playing well in center he’s seen time on the corners. Unlike Almonte, Perez is 5 for 16 (.313) with 2 walks and 2 steals.  He faced the same or better level of opposition as Almonte according to Baseball Reference’s opposition quality rating. His speed and range would seem to put him ahead of Almonte defensively as well but he’s not the only one.

  • Our old friend JoeyT is hitting the ball like he means it once more. Joey had a bad start to last season at Gwinnett but his second half  was a reminder of the player we were told he would be. From the first of July through the end of August he slashed .282/.355/.418/.773 with 9 homers and 24 walks while striking out 43 times in 245 PA and  he remained hot this spring. Yesterday he was 1 for 2 with a walk but that one was a three run homer in the seventh making him 9 for 22.  With the small sample size, it’s spring training caveats firmly in place, after today his slash this spring is 0409/.500/.681.

Logically then if camp ended tomorrow the Braves would take Gosselin, Perez and JoeyT.
