Bridge to Braves stadium focus of Tuesday vote

CARLA CALDWELL / ATLANTA BUSINESS CHRONICLE

Cobb officials are expected to vote Tuesday whether to begin negotiations with AECOM Technical Service to design a proposed bridge that would connect the new Atlanta Braves stadium with Cobb Galleria, the Marietta Daily Journal is reporting.

The county transportation department estimates the bridge’s cost between $6 million to $9 million. It is still unclear how the project would be funded.

County Chairman Tim Lee hinted at a Monday town hall meeting that money to pay for the bridge could come from taxes, the MDJ reports.

Some residents at the meeting questioned the need for the bridge and said they don’t want taxes to pay for the project, the paper said.

Some of the 80 residents who attended Lee’s town hall complained that they wanted to see a final plan for the bridge because descriptions Lee has given at previous meetings differ greatly.

Most recently, at a town hall meeting in January, Lee said the bridge could be two levels, accommodating pedestrians and a shuttle service. Another option is for the bridge to only accommodate pedestrians, Lee has said.

Lee declined to specify which bridge he preferred.

“There’s a lot of different designs being considered,” he said.

[ Ed. note:  yes, they’re planning a vote on a bridge whose design and purpose hasn’t been publicly announced.  Go figure.  Much more about the debate is in the MDJ article.  ]
