This morning, the Braves once again shuffled their bullpen. This time, it was an injury rather than poor performance that caused the problem, as David O’Brien of The Athletic reported that the Atlanta Braves had placed RHP Daysbel Hernández on the 10-day IL on Friday with a sore shoulder.

Atlanta has already been dealing with a number of injuries to relievers. Joe Jimenez has been out all season long as he recovers from knee surgery and Aaron Bummer has been out with inflammation in his throwing shoulder since late August. With Hernandez now out, Atlanta's bullpen depth it going to be really tested in the 2025 season's final weeks.

Control and injury issues are holding Daysbel Hernandez back

Hernández looks the part of a setup man and potential closer, but he’s never been able to reduce his walk rate and make his strikeout stuff a late-inning weapon. This season with Atlanta, he threw 37 1/3 innings over 39 appearances, striking out 65 and walking 33. It doesn't help that this isn't Hernandez's first time on the shelf as he missed time this summer with forearm troubles and he missed significant time in the minors as well.

The Braves optioned him to Gwinnett on August 18 because they needed a fresh arm, and recalled him on September 4. The hard-throwing righty appeared in only one game after his recall, facing five batters and allowing three runs on three hits while retiring only two.

The club recalled RHP Hunter Stratton to fill the bullpen vacancy. Stratton appeared in six games for the Braves between July 25 and August 1, allowing two runs in 9 2/3 IP and earning a save before being optioned on September 2 to add a fresh arm to the pen.

That’s a Wrap

The season is winding down, and a minimum 15-day IL stint means he can’t return before September 27, so it’s unlikely he’ll be back this year.

I grew up in Illinois listening to baseball when the leagues only had 8 teams. My dad and mom died Cub fans always believing that next year would be it. I was a Cub fan until I realized I didn't believe Cub ownership wanted to win. I loved the way the Milwaukee Braves played when Red Schoendienst was at 2nd, Joe Adcock at 1st, Eddie Mathews at 3rd and and Hank Aaron in the outfield but I didn't say that out loud. I joined the Air Force in 1968 and spent 28 years there, mostly overseas without baseball. I returned in 1991 I started following the Atlanta Braves on TBS; I've been with them ever since. My oldest son is a Rangers fan while my youngest is a Braves guy like me. I'm an old school guy I guess, I see no need for a designated pinch hitter and would prefer the All Star game to be about the All Star Game. I do think replay is needed on line calls and at the bases since the technology makes such things a snap; not balls and strikes. I also think Bug $elig is a joke, blackouts are a form of censorship and we have too many teams. More on those another
