Last week, Alan warned of a possible pitching crunch, and it looks now like the Atlanta Braves signing of Jhoulys Chacin wasn’t a random depth addition.

Ask who would take the open rotation spot, Snitker said there was no decision yet, but they might choose to use an opener or one of their other starter options, but Chacin might get the first crack at the job.

He entered the game on Sunday after Sean Newcomb failed to keep his pitch count down, and threw 3 2/3 innings, allowing one hit and picking up the win against the Mets.

The Braves stretched out Josh Tomlin to act as a spot starter before acquiring Chacin, but he’s a better option working one or two innings from the bullpen.

Bryse Wilson may get a start, and Tucker DavidsonHuascar Ynoa, Patrick Weigel, and Jasseel De La Cruz are also on the 40-man roster.

Roster Options

Touki Toussaint followed Foltynewicz on the mound in Monday night’s game but didn’t fare any better than his predecessor, allowing six runs on six hits in 2 2/3 innings.

Touki has excellent stuff, and his line looks worse than it was when watching it. Like Newcomb and Foltynewicz, control issues have hindered his progress, but his stuff may earn him a shot at the job.

More from Tomahawk Take

Wilson made his debut against the Pirates in 2018 and picked up the win after throwing five innings of three-hit, shutout ball. Thirteen days later, he made the first of two relief appearances, but he didn’t fare as well, giving up three runs to Boston; five days later, he gave up two runs to the Cardinals.

He broke camp with the Atlanta Braves in 2019 and started against the Phillies, who chased him after he gave up four runs in 3 1/3 innings. He made three relief appearances and three more spot-starts last season, finishing the season with a 7.20 ERA in 20 1/3 innings.

Weigel burst on the scene in 2017 and looked on the fast track to the majors until an elbow injury cost him the 2018 season.

Davidson made 21 starts in AA last season pitching to a 2.03 ERA in 110+ innings and earning a move to AA. He made four starts with Gwinnett, throwing 19 innings with a 2.84 ERA.
