Delgado settles in

In each of the first three innings, Delgado faced four Mets.  The batters reaching did so via different methods:  a hit, a walk, and an error.  None of them scored, though there were a couple of close fly balls that would have made a difference in a hurry.

Atlanta, however, got started early:  Bourn reached second thanks to an error in the LF corner.  Deep flies to right (Heyward) and left (Jones) then moved him up two bases.  1-0 Braves.

It was the next inning when the Braves got even more frisky:

  • Uggla walked
  • Diaz single
  • Freeman (can you even imagine him hitting 7th now??) doubled in Uggla.  2-0.
  • Pastornicky doubled in Diaz and Freeman.  4-0.
  • Delgado tried to bunt him over, but ended up on 2nd base after the first baseman attempted to make a play at third base.  Instead, both runners advanced:  5-0 and Delgado ended up on second base.
  • After a Bourn groundout (Delgado to 3rd), Heyward singled on a ball squirted toward third base, scoring his pitcher. 6-zip, and Santana was knocked out of the game.

It could have been worse than even that:  both Chipper and Uggla late came up with runners on in front of them, but it’s hard to argue with a 5-run inning.

Delgado did allow two runs in the next half-inning via a double and a single.  That likewise could have gone worse for the Braves as there was another deep fly out and the frame ended with 2 runners aboard.

In the 5th, Delgado walked one-hitter and yielded another hit.  His WHIP is taking a beating, but thus far the dam has held.

The Atlanta Braves offense continued the onslaught in 5th.

  • Chipper walked
  • McCann doubled to the right field corner
  • After an Uggla popout, Diaz popped a long sacrifice fly – part of his really good night.  Jones scored and McCann moved up.
  • Freeman singled in his catcher.
  • 2 more runs:  8-2 Atlanta.
