TT:  It almost seems that the Nationals couldn’t buy a player this off-season at any price.  Is that partly a deferred money thing, or players being asked to do something they weren’t comfortable with, or … what?  Any guesses?  Bad luck?

DoD:  I think it was mostly the deferrals because the Nats did offer more money for Jason Heyward and Ben Zobrist, but if you remember Max Scherzer’s contract from last year, some of that money was deferred as well. The issue regarding the money has to do with the Nats sharing a TV network (MASN) with the Baltimore Orioles. I don’t think it was about the chaos in the clubhouse from last year because if free agents didn’t want to play with Papelbon, [General Manager] Mike Rizzo would have found a way to get rid of them. If anything, this offseason showed fans that the Nats have the money to make the moves, but it’s just not all up front.
